My impression from a variety of sources is that it's gaining popularity, as is open marriage generally, of which hotwifing is a distinct subset. It remains taboo, however, a fringe behavior, which in some ways is a good thing because that adds to the kink.

I voted “about the same”. My opinion, for what it is worth, is that people now know more of the intricacies of what it means to be in an Open Relationship, and more people are familiar with the concepts of Hotwifing, Cuckolding, and Stag/Vixen but that doesn’t translate it a growing number of couples that enter and stay active in the lifestyle.

I’ve noticed more references to Poly relationships in popular TV shows and I believe that is leading to a better, more accepting world but I don’t think that has (yet) resulted in more couples entering the playing field.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the Covid situation is largely behind us. There is a lot of pent-up sexual energy out there and as bars open back up, and restaurant and movie houses start luring people back, I suspect at lot of that energy will end up being fulfilled; however, I also suspect that as things level back to normalcy, the heightened desire to “play”, whatever that means to a given couple, will also return to normal.

Open Relationships are still fewer than vanilla relationships and I just don’t see that changing drastically during my lifetime. I wish it would, but...

Netflix should do a miniseries with character development and not some superficial comedy (Hall Pass) or moralistic hit piece (Indecent Proposal).

You’re right. That is what is needed but Netflix is too prudish to do this. A European channel would be more likely to handle it. The BBC recently showed a couple of 21 year olds in full frontal nudity as it portrayed their developing relationship in Normal People.
One difficulty is deciding how the plot would end. Do they all live happily ever after in their open marriage or threesome household or does it all come to grief to suit current sensibilities?
In the meantime let’s hope for more accepting references without the usual belly laughs.

We have been on a societal curve that ethical non-monogamy has been slowly growing since the 1960s. Hotwifing is part of that curve. I believe that this lifestyle and all lifestyles/fetishes have always been in the minds off our ancestors. As a mindful openness, travel and especially the internet has evolved, it has opened all up to many more. Over the past several years, couples have been able to research and discuss thoughts and feelings on topics such as what has brought us here together.

Funny you would mention “Indecent Proposal”. I loved that movie for several reasons.

One, Demi Moore was smoking hot back then!

Two, It was among the most thought provoking for me as I was acutely aware how absolutely certain I would have been in encouraging my wife to sleep with the billionaire.
So much so, that I had to temper my discussions with other people lest they realize that my interest wasn’t just financial.

I answered growing a little bit simply by the large number of young couples joining a Facebook page that we are on.
