The Wager - Part 3

Dana eyed Lennie as they walked into the expansive lobby of the casino and headed for the boutiques that fled down a long wide corridor. As they strode along with those who were making their way to other destinations, Dana said, “That was interesting.”

“Yes, it was, wasn’t it?” Lennie said. She felt proud of herself for the way she handled things and just a little giddy. Already, she was thinking of what her husband’s punishment was going to be. She tapped Dana on the arm as they passed a mannequin in a flowing white silk negligee. “Let’s go in here.”

They turned into the tiny boutique and split up perusing the racks. Lennie was after something seductive, but she wasn’t sure what it was she wanted, only that when she saw it, she’d know it. Most of the stuff on the racks was fairly conservative however. There was one little number, a white and red lacey thing, that had potential, but she wanted more. She wanted something with class, yet revealing. She wanted something that would fit nicely with what she had in mind for Steven, something that would send him to her feet. And then, there it was - a sleek, black piece with a flowing hem. She pulled it off the hanger and held it up, imagined it on her body. The slit up the side would drive Steven nuts. She groped for the tag praying it was a four. It was a six. She rifled through the rest of the rack, but to no avail and frowned. Just my luck, she muttered.

“Oooh, what’s that?” Dana said coming up beside her. She reached and touched the silky, soft fabric. “Nice.”

“It’s a six though,” Lennie said.

“Hold it up,” Dana said, and when Lennie did, Dana’s eyes lit. “What are you talking about? It’ll look great on you.”

“I don’t know,” Lennie said, debating whether she should look further or settle. She glanced at the price tag and tapped her foot on the floor.

“How much?”

“One ninety-five,” Lennie said.

Dana shrugged. “It is a Wang.”

“I know. I wouldn’t even consider it if it wasn’t.” Lennie was quiet a minute. Finally, she said, “Shit, I really want this.”

“Okay, so get it already?”

Lennie pursed her lips. “You think? I don’t want to look like I’m swimming in it.”

Dana rolled her eyes. “Len,” she said, “believe me, you’ll look fab. “

Lennie looked at Dana sidelong. “Right.”

“You know, if I don’t know better, I’d think you were picking this out for Derek,” Dana said with a smirk.
Lennie swatted her arm. “Will you stop? It’s for Steven and . . .” she felt a smirk of her own come to her lips, “and then maybe for Derek later.” They both burst into quiet laughter as Lennie draped the gown over her arm. “Hell, I’m getting it! Shall we check the panties out over there?”

“Why not?” Dana said. “Although I doubt you’ll be wearing them long after Steve sees you in that.”

“We’ll see.” She headed toward the table with Dana in tow and then stopped.

“What?” Dana said.

“What’s that store over there?” she said, pointing through the plate glass window. “I don’t think I’ve seen it before.”

Dana craned her head. “It’s some kind of novelty store.”

Lennie moved up so she could see what was in the front window of the shop. When the display of vibrators came into focus, she shot Dana a playful glance. “An adult novelty store.” She winked. “I wonder what kind of trouble we could find in there?”

Dana flashed a broad grin. “Let’s go find out!”

Two weeks later, Lennie came up with a plan. But there was one huge obstacle. She needed a man, and she needed him to be someone her and Steven knew and would be willing to be discreet. Derek would’ve been a perfect choice, but outside of chatting him up at The Lounge, she really didn’t know an awful lot about him. But who else was there? Bob? She didn’t think so. And she was sure Steven wouldn’t take kindly to having his best friend in on a ruse. She could call one of those escort places and see if they’d help her out, but wondered how to go about it.

As she sat in the tub pondering how to pull it off, the more she began to realize the hopelessness of it all. She flipped the drain lever up on the tub and got out. “What was I thinking?” She muttered. She rolled herself up in a bath sheet and wrung the water out of her hair.

In the other room, Steven was working on the computer. She peeked in on him and then went to the bedroom. What could she do to teach him a lesson? Her cell phone chattered and she picked it up. “Hi Dana, what’s up?”

She listened as Dana related a piece of tantalizing information. “Where did you hear that? You’re kidding . . .. Really? And you’re positive? Okay, yeah . . .. I don’t know, maybe.” She nibbled a fingernail. “You think I should? I mean . . . he is the perfect choice, except . . .. Yeah, I know it was my idea, but . . .. Okay, okay. You win. So how do think I should bring it up . . .? Lunch? I suppose I could . . .. Yeah, I’m going tonight. Is Bob going . . .? Good, it’ll be just the two of us then . . .. Great. See ya. Oh, what time . . .? Kay. Bye.”

That night, she and Dana parked themselves at the end of the bar. As they nursed their rum and cokes, they went over how Lennie should approach Derek about lunch. “It has to be casual,” Dana said. “Tell him you know he does home repair and you want to talk to him about a project.”

Lennie mulled the suggestion over and nodded. “That’s perfect.” A smile. “I guess I really lucked out here, didn’t I?”

“I think so,” Dana agreed. She sipped her drink and nudged Lennie. “He’s here.”

“Where?”

“Just walked in. Over by the pool table.”

“Oh, I see him.” Be cool, Lennie thought. Let him come to us. But her insides were churning. She sat there for the next fifteen minutes until at last she saw him look their way. He waved, but stayed put, talking to some guy.

“Who’s he with?” Dana said.

Lennie shook her head. “No idea.” She finished the rest of her drink and ordered another. “I’m going to the ladies room. Watch my purse?”

Dana nodded.

As she headed around the bar, she kept a discreet eye on Derek, hoping he’d see her and break away from the man he was talking to. But he kept on chatting. She frowned and pushed through the ladies room door. When she came out, he was no longer there, and for a brief second she felt the wind run out of her until she saw him hanging down with Dana. She took a deep breath and took her time reaching them.

“Len, look who I found,” Dana said.

“Hey Derek. How’s things?”

“They are,” he said grabbing a handful of popcorn from the basket in front of them on the bar. “And you?”

Lennie nodded. “Pretty good.”

They all traded chitchat for a while until at last Dana conveniently excused herself, a sign for Lennie to make her pitch. “You do home remolding, right?” Lennie said.

Derek shrugged. “Some. Nothing huge. Kitchen and bath stuff. Why?”

“I might have a project for you.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah, Steve and I are interested in updating our master bath. I was wondering if you’d be interested in it.

“I might. How quick you need it done?”

“No hurry,” she said coyly. “Would you be up for having lunch sometime this week to go over it.”

He took a pull on his beer. “Sure, When?”

“Wednesday work for you?”

He pulled out his iphone and scrolled down to his calendar. “How ‘bout Thursday, ‘round one?”
Lennie checked her calendar as well. “Yeah, that’s fine. Shall we meet at Harvey’s? My treat.”
He cocked his brow. “I’ll be in my work duds. Can we do Panera bread or something like that?”

“Sure. Panera bread works.” She punched the appointment into her PDA and slipped it back in her purse. “Say, you up for a game of pool?”

A smile. “With you, you bet.” He called the bar tender over; broke a five into a fistful of quarters and the two of them sauntered over to the table and took up their pool cues.
Life is short - live well, love fiercely!
