I’ve read the FAQ on ranks and wondered what the different ranks are?

The best thing about a community like this is that... it's a community. That means, little to no hierarchy, which means... if we want to know something which isn't on the site - add it yourself!

I have just 'celebrated' my 50th post and have noticed my rank change from 'Virgin' to 'Trainable' which has made me wonder whether rank is based purely on number of posts or whether it is awarded by Admins and/or Mods?

It's just the number of posts, yes. IIRC you'll change to Experienced at 100 posts or thereabouts.
