I’m a 52-year-old man. I was close friends with a woman (now my ex) for a year before we became a couple for a few months. Eventually, we ended the romantic relationship at her request and returned to being friends.
During our relationship, I valued my independence and wasn’t always fully available, which caused some tension. I was also going through a stressful period at work and, in an effort to be honest with her, I turned down a casual relationship with someone else. This might have affected my ability to fully commit to our relationship, and I sometimes felt emotionally distant. Ultimately, we mutually decided to break up and remain friends.
While we were together, I sometimes took on a more “macho” role, but since she’s a strong, confident woman, I think neither of us took it very seriously.
