Ok, I think I need to address the mild 'frenzy' that has shown itself in the recent comments, speculating about Lucy's mum's sexual interest in me. Or my interest in her.

I think I picked up that expression from my dad.
And now that you've pointed it out, I realise that I don't actually know what 'tenterhooks' are.

So I looked it up: a 'tenter' is a framework on which milled cloth is stretched for drying without shrinkage. Tenterhooks are the hooks around the edge of the frame.

The expression, being “on tenterhooks” compares the tenseness of the stretched fabric to the tension of nervous waiting.
