A text came in and it took her out of the show, so I took the phone to help her out—and she came at me with both hands in a fierce aggression and snatched the phone out of my hands. It was honestly a bit crazy and very out of character. It kind of made a scene at the table in front of her family.

That brings us to now, a few hours later. I went up to bed, but decided to listen in a bit. I heard her mom say, clear as day: “I think he’s suspicious, so be careful.”

She responded: “He’s not suspicious.”

Then they got up for refills—I went to bathroom. I came back, and heard her mom again say: “He’s definitely suspicious.” And then they started whispering and I couldn’t make anything out and I think one of them might have heard me make a creek at top of stairs, and they pivoted to talking at normal volume about how great our kids are.

I’ve been sitting at the top of the stairs quietly writing this and it’s been all inane conversation about normal stuff. But then I heard my wife share texts with her mom to read, to which her mom laughed and said: “I don’t think that’s what your husband thinks you’re doing.” (Implying I thought she was cheating.)

My wife responded: “He does.”

Mom responded: “He’s not a stupid man. He’s not a stupid man.”

Then they changed the subject again.

Now, objectively, I think it’s likely I either misheard some stuff or misunderstood, but it just feels like a bunch of red flags. And it’s combined with the increased amount of sex we’ve been having (I’ve always read that’s a read flag because women feel guilty).

I think the next obvious step is to get ahold of her phone and check the texts—though unless she’s a complete idiot, she’d delete the texts off her phone.

So that leaves me a bit helpless to sort it out. I don’t want to call her out on any of this because it’s not concrete enough—I’m not even convinced.

So yea, not a good vibe right now and I’m definitely feeling anxious.

Edit: So something definitely going on. Sister was talking about a guy she likes and mom made a comment: “Well, it’s much easier if you only have to deal with one interest at a time.”

My wife said: “Yea, yea.”

Her mom: “Well you have to choose, you know. You have to do what makes you happy. (Then something about affection.).”

My wife: I know you’re right.

I’m just beside myself. There’s no way I can be misinterpreting this I don’t think.

Edit 2: I heard this speech from her mom:

Mom: “My take, and you can take it or leave it, for what’s going on between you and your husband, is that you’re bored. And every relationship gets to that point. But my hope is that the two of you can work through it.”

Her sister kept telling her to keep her voice down. Which enforces the strangeness of how frequently they kept whispering.
