I think it's key to mention society to be referencing significantly American society, which publicly is very puritanical. And as one who grew up in the American south during segregation, that's a dynamic too. I personally lost my virginity while in the navy and in Europe and that included exposure to more open lifestyles and they definitely got into my head!!!
