I met my wife in college, where we were in the same grad school program. Just before I started dating her, she had been in an affair with one of our married college professors. He was very esteemed and traveled a lot that year, presenting his most recent research article at conferences. His wife had to stay behind with their children, so he always paid the conference fees and the cost of an extra hotel room, for M to accompany him to all of the conferences. Her room was for cover, and she always went to his room at night. But a lot of the other students and college professors figured out that they were having an affair.

He liked fine dining and fine scotch, and on these conference trips, they would sneak away from the hotel where the conference was, to have dinner together, somewhere else. They often snuck away for weekend getaways together.

M finally became tired of dating a married man, and ended it. We started dating shortly after that. M was honest with me, and told me of the affair, because we both encountered him on campus from time to time.
Everybody knew when we got engaged. Many people wondered if I knew about the affair. There was a lot of whispering about whether or not I knew, and if it would end the engagement, if I found.

We were both older, and each of us knew that the other had been with plenty of other people. It was just a little different, that one of my wife's past lovers had been a much older married man, who was one of our professors. Plus, it was a campus scandal, that people whispered about, behind our back.

It was odd, whenever I encountered him on campus, or around town. He would nod and smile an odd smile.
I didn't know him well enough, so I couldn't tell if his smile was his way of gloating, to suggest that, while she was my fiance, she had recently been his mistress.
