The traffic moves slowly today. Yummy mummies dropping off their little charges at school; the last of the bed-rumpled daddies making their way into work. Joyce is in turmoil. 'What on earth am I doing? Is he really going to be there? What would Simon think?' So many questions crowd her spinning mind. The journey seems to take forever, but at last she pulls into the gates of the car-park.

Her eyes are drawn immediately to a black luxury Mercedes estate, the early autumn sun lighting up its immaculately polished paintwork. It bares a set of personalised number-plates. 'JM1'. Joyce's heart skips a beat. 'Surely it can't be?!' And there's a free space right next to it. Just co-incidence, or an omen? Joyce pulls in to park. A smartly dressed military man wearing a tweed flat cap waits patiently behind the wheel of the Mercedes. As soon as Joyce turns to look he raises a hand, waves and smiles. Such beautiful, beautiful twinkling eyes!

James steps lithely from the Mercedes and in seconds stands next to the driver's door of Joyce's car. He opens it effortlessly. "Good morning, Joyce. So very pleased to see you!" He doffs his cap, then extends a hand to help Joyce out. "And you too, James!" She takes his hand, so warm, strong and welcoming and steps out into the cool morning air...

A few pleasantries then it's time to get the dogs out. Star emerges from the back of the Mercedes and sits obediently next to his master. Mollie's entrance is, however, a very different affair. She jumps straight out and dashes round like a mad thing, barking enthusiastically and refusing to come to heel.

James smiles and shakes his head. "I see we're in need of a lot of training, aren't we?" Joyce giggles. "Erm ... yes!"

They get to work immediately. James pulls a back of dog treats from the pocket of his Barbour jacket and hands it to Joyce. "Keep them hungry, keep them interested. It's the best way." He shows her how best to use the treats to reward Mollie and before long there's an obedient dog waiting patiently by Joyce's side.

"That's the way to do it, Joyce! You're a natural!"

Joyce beams as she pats Mollie's head.

"You just need to be shown how to do it..."
