Special tribute to our unsung hero, Leggysman

Most have probably noticed the forum's recent hiccups — the outages, the rollbacks, the posts that vanished into the ether this past week. What many may not know is the challenges behind the scenes.

Since allengt’s passing, this forum has been running without an active owner. No living owner, shoestring budget, and all volunteer staff. But what OHW has is a secret weapon: Leggysman. One man who drops whatever he’s doing to keep the lights on, and who has spent this past year fighting off bot swarms and now back-to-back hack attacks that required him to restore the entire site from backups two days in a row. Every post you've written, every story thread, every friendship made here, all of it survives because one guy keeps showing up at a keyboard and refusing to let this place die.

When I was reflecting on this yesterday, one image appeared in imagination…Leggysman standing defiant like heroic Conan the Barbarian against a relentless swarm of bot locusts with the beautiful Sandy by his side.

You have my deepest appreciation, Leggysman. This community wouldn’t be here right now if not for your effort and the hard work of the forum mods.

And I know I'm not the only one who feels this way.

If this forum has meant something to you over the years, I invite you to share a few words below. If you want to show more support, maybe make a donation to the site. Beyond expressing our appreciation, let’s show our defiance and send a message that all this nuisance accomplishes is bringing our community together with more resolve.

PS: If you post anything here or elsewhere on the forum right now, please save a copy offline in case restoration by backup is necessary again. Repost if needed. Don’t let your messages disappear because of some pile of shit who has too much time on his hands.

The thought of Sandy evokes for me is that of civilizational beauty, the beauty so as to launch 1000 ships, I've said. (Google The Iliad). And the fitting theme of Leggysman as Barbarian Restorer of the Realm. His battle symitar felling the cyber locusts of Armegeddon, or of Exodus. So worthy of such knightly heralds!!

What a lovely thing to wake up to this morning.

Thank you Greg_N_Shelley (very creative as always! ) and everyone who commented.

It has been quite the year of technical challenges so far. Shout-out to ferrisandrews for the helpful suggestions; I'm a systems programmer, not a web or IT guy - although I have had experience running a forum, and writing code for the web server we use.

I know that a number of us offered to lend a hand in recent years, as the challenges to OHW mounted and its future began to look shaky. Despite my being a relative newcomer compared to many of you - my first post just turned 4 years old - I'm grateful to armyguyot1 for letting me give it a shot. His recent unexpected retirement from the site left me alone at the wheel so to speak, so I'm thankful to elina, Her number1, and coastalkid for agreeing to help out. I think we can all agree that the forum moderation is in good hands with those three.

The site does need another techie in case of the me-getting-hit-by-a-bus (or Airbus) scenario. chris is still active occasionally, and I've reached out to afagehi7 in hopes that he'll come back to active participation. Those guys could salvage things if something happened to me.

Yesterday there was another positive development for the site's future - wherein our hosting provider gave us additional access to accounts that only allengt had been privy to. That's a big relief.

For leggysandy and I, this site changed our lives when we found it 4 years ago. It's a special place, and I know that like me, any of you would do whatever you could to keep OHW alive and kicking. Long may it continue.


Now I just need to get my wife to read this thread
and also put on my moderator hat and move it out of the Hotties ... soonish

I echo the appreciation to all who do the work behind the scenes and sometimes front and center when needed to keep the lights on and to keep this community alive and well. Likewise, I also appreciate the contributors new and old, frequent and infrequent… you all are why we keep coming here.

But to the point of this thread… Thank you Leggysman!!! You have clearly saved the day several times over and I appreciate and applaud you! Cheers!
