“For each his own, I guess but if she was my woman I’d just tell her to toe the line or pack her bags. A man has to rule his roost or the chickens will stray unless, of course, you want her to stray then that is a different matter.”

That really was excellent dialogue, really quite poignant and sad at times especially when Michael was relating how Candy drifted away from him as far as sex itself went. I suppose the sadness is that their emotional bond was never enough either, for as soon as she met the right stranger who satisfied her sexually and they got on, as far as you could tell in the five minutes they were together, that trumped all the decades she'd been married to Michael. I suppose Candy sending Michael to Coventry for five years with not a word of affection, over something very minor and trivial, showed there was no real emotional bond worth having anyway. Still she still cares for him and that's something even if a pitiable return on his own feelings for her.
It was excellent writing and one of your best ever imo.

Michael lay in bed. On one side was Jill on the other was Gloria. Gloria as always placed her hand on his erect penis and smiled at him while Jill lay with her head on his shoulder.
“I miss Candy,” Gloria told him, “I wish she would come home.”
“I think Candy is at home, Gloria,” Michael replied. “It’s just that her home is no longer our home.”

Michael turned his head toward Jill. “You never told me that, Jill. I guess I should have known.”

Michael was worried the conversation was becoming morbid so asked Gloria, “How’s your job going, Honey?”

Michael was listening from the bathroom door and a big smile spread across his face as he mumbled “Yes, finally she will be back, until next time, I guess.”

Michael lay in bed. On one side was Jill on the other was Gloria. Gloria as always placed her hand on his erect penis and smiled at him while Jill lay with her head on his shoulder.
“I miss Candy,” Gloria told him, “I wish she would come home.”
“I think Candy is at home, Gloria,” Michael replied. “It’s just that her home is no longer our home.”

Michael turned his head toward Jill. “You never told me that, Jill. I guess I should have known.”
“I don’t even think Candy knew. I never told her. She always thought that I loved you a lot more than her but I just enjoyed being with the pair of you. It was lots of fun growing up together. Remember when Candy lost her virginity? I felt so sorry for you. She made you lick her fingers.”
“Please Jill, don’t remind me.” He had told a modified version to Gloria out of embarrassment.

Gloria missed the point of Jill’s statement. “They were in love even then, were they,” Gloria asked.
“Yes, I think Michael was in love with her from a very young age but Candy’s love came to her later.” Michael was pleased that Gloria had moved the conversation on.
“Leslie seems to be sticking it out with Marcus. I thought she would be home by now,” Gloria observed.
“The great womaniser Marcus may have been tamed,” Michael told her.
“I doubt that,” Jill observed. “I think that Leslie might like being with the tourists. She may even have met someone by now.”
“I hope so,” Michael stated. “She was a lost soul living down the back in the unit, only going out for essentials such as food.”
“Yes, it’s bad when a person gives up on life like that,” Gloria stated.
Michael was worried the conversation was becoming morbid so asked Gloria, “How’s your job going, Honey?”
“The job is really great. We have been running the promotions at local events around the region and with free tastings, the wine sales are up around three hundred per cent.”
“You said we, have you got others involved?”
“Yes, a couple of the girls from Sydney came across. They love Perth and are talking about staying here after our promotions at the end of next year.”
“So what happens then?”

Great story arc, thanks Goyse. Talk about a bunch of characters that readers love to both hate and love at the same time.
Desperately sad to hear Michael tell his back story. That sad line “Oh, yes. I love the bitch to death but I’m wasting my time having sex with her because it doesn’t work anymore for us.” From what he said, it never did. Candy gave her virginity to someone else and fucked dozens of men before ever deigning to have sex with Michael. She’d come home and tell her “friend” Michael about the sex she was having, and after a while started giving him hand jobs. Sounds like it went on for months before she wanted Michael inside her. Scarcely the action of a woman deeply in love with a man. Makes one wonder why she ever agreed to marry him in the first place.
Michael said “Don’t worry, she will always be there for us, not sexually maybe, but she will come and go from time to time just to let us know that she still cares.” The reality is that Candy has never really cared for anything but fucking anyone but Michael since the day she lost her virginity. Sadly it seems that Candy was never saw Michael as more than platonic love in her life, which explains how she could so easily shut him out for five years. Michael loves her dearly, but Candy’s love has always been shallow for everyone and everything except herself and big cocks.
Our poor loving hero says “Yes, Sex is and always has been a big part of Candy’s life. It is not all sex, of course, she loves him as well. Maybe one day she may bring him back to live with us.” Even after all she has done to Michael, all the disrespect and lack of love she has shown him, he will still take her back. Because at the end of the day they are two opposites, and opposites attract. Michael loves unconditionally, cares for those around him and is always ready to forgive their mistakes. Candy’s love is reserved for those who she needs something from, be it great sex or help and support. She cares and lives for nothing but herself and her next orgasm, treating all those who love her, and her children, as disposable inconveniences in her life. As demonstrated by the five year lock out and lack of apologies throughout the stories, she doesn’t feel any need to forgive others nor say sorry for her actions.
Gloria does Michael an injustice when she says “Come on Jilly, honey. Michael is only half a man without Candy, the love of his life.” Truth is that Michael’s a better man without Candy in his life. He’s able to focus on others without the distraction of her and her drama. Ditto Jill gets it wrong when she says “No, Michael knew and encouraged her. Mike cheats on her.” For most of the story Candy cheated on Michael, the classics being all the times she was seeing Tod behind his back and the time she was planning to move out and live with Jeff.
Poetic justice that Candy ended up with Mike, a man as selfish, self-centred and sex driven as she is Both of them complete assholes to those they say claimed to love. So typical that Candy wants to come home to have her next baby. No doubt the prelude to dumping another unwanted kid on Michael to look after before she’s off chasing the next big cock. Seems their story is a long way from over.

You are too kind Chris. With how she's approached getting pregnant with each of her children, it would be more accurate to say that Candy's never cared if Michael is the father, and has often hoped he’s not. The thing with Candy is that she’s such a compulsive liar that you can’t believe anything she says to Michael, Jill or Gloria. When pregnant with Teddy, Candy hadn’t had sex, or spent any time alone with Michael for months and thought Greg was the father. As Greg put it, “Candy doesn’t use protection. No birth control and we have been having sex every night. Unless she is infertile she will be pregnant which explains why she can have sex every night." First time round Candy thought she was having Greg’s baby and kept the pregnancy secret from Michael. She said nothing until Michael noticed she hadn’t had a period in three months and asked her when the baby was due. Candy was surprised and not particularly happy when Michael pointed out that Tod could be the father and never expressed any happiness at the suggestion that maybe even Michael could be the father.
When Teddy was born, before she even saw or spoke to Michael, Candy called Tod and invited him back into her life. After that, she secretly spent time with Tod playing happy families and fucking him behind Michael's back for weeks before Michael found out about it. Her attitude to having children with Michael was made clear in Candy 2 Ch8; She liked the feeling of Tod’s sperm that leaked from her for days after he ejaculated inside her. It reminded her of how virile and fertile his swimmers were. Only ninety five per cent effective the doctor had told her. That means there is still a chance. She smiled at the thought. Then she looks in the mirror and says to herself Maybe if I can get Michael to make Jilly pregnant then he won’t mind if I deliver another son for Tod. Hhmm, maybe.”
There’s the video Michael isn’t meant to see where Tod says “You let me get you pregnant with Teddy.” Candy replies; “Yes, and that was a decision that Michael and I made together to take the risk. There was just a small chance that I had not ovulated at that time but we got it wrong. There will be no mistakes this time, Tod. When the time is right I’ll talk to Michael about it and if he agrees then it’ll happen.”
Then before the “trip to Europe” Candy says to Michael “How does a wife tell the man she loves more than anything in the world that she wants to have unprotected sex with another man knowing that she will most likely come back to him carrying the other man’s child?” Just after that she swaps out her IUD for a far less effective diaphragm before going away with Tod. A trip where she expects to be fucked by Tod morning noon and night for two weeks, with her being fertile for 3 of those days with a 5+% chance of getting pregnant every time they have sex.
So all in all, other than a few conversations with Michael that were littered with lies and dishonesty, there's no evidence Candy ever really wanted a child with Michael. But there's plenty of evidence that she wanted babies with other men.
Although, to be fair to Candy, it's also clear from the frequency with which she’s abandoned her children to be with her lovers that she’s never really wanted a family at all. She’s too self-centred for that. For Candy getting pregnant has never been about having a family, it’s been about adding the spice of pregnancy risk to her fucking around. Something she’s been able to do safe in the knowledge that Michael will look after any resulting kids. So the story ends with Candy coming home to drop her latest progeny on the doorstep of the one man she knows she can manipulate into looking after it, regardless of who the father is.

It's a good job then that she only exists in Goyse's marvellously inventive imagination. She provides the perfect mix of external beauty which hides a black inner core but has the power to ignite the gunpowder beneath multiple plots. She's the fulcrum on which all the action balances and an absolutely brilliant invention.

No you're not Goyse, but you have hinted she doesn't see Michael again for possibly decades, so we hope maybe Marcus, or if not, another person has made her a more contented and happier woman. Maybe an idea for another Goyse classic saga?
