As a student with a minor in history, I don't think many will know what that is, unless you have taken an upper level ancient history class for that time frame. But then again, that phrase is known to be used today enough that folks might be looking it up to understand it's implications. And YES, I'm trying to lead some of our fellow readers to look it up!!

Right. Basically, Roman generals were allowed to have their armies as long as they were far enough from Rome itself. The Rubicon was one of the markers of 'too close'. When Caesar crossed the Rubicon with his army, he was functionally declaring war on Rome. At that point he would be victorious or he would be dead... and if he was lucky he would die in combat, because he would have had a Very Bad Day if they captured him.

Of course, it ultimately didn't turn out well for him anyway.
